Sun`s Island
Also called Titicaca Island is a Bolivian island located on Lake Titicaca in the municipality of Copacabana, belonging to the province of Manco Kapac in the department of La Paz. It has a length of 9.6 km by 4.6 km wide and an area of 14.3 km². It is the largest island of the lake, its original name is Titikaka Island and therefore the lake where it bears its name, which means “stone puma”.
Throughout the island there are several archaeological sites, where the “Sacred Rock” or “Rock of the Origin” stands out, which according to the chronicles was the site from which Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo left to found the city of Cuzco. Also the Chinkana or maze is appreciated, besides the Palace of Pilkokaina of the Inca period, unique by its constructive characteristics. Another site is the steps of Yumani, which lead to the upper part of the island, where there is a water source from pre-Columbian times. In addition, at the top of the highest hill on the north side of the island, you can see a monolithic viewpoint that points to the islands visible from the summit. The viewpoint was built by Ito Bastías and Josué Garay, and is made only with rocks found on the summit, without using any binder. On the island is also the archaeological museum of Challapampa, where archaeological pieces are rescued from the surroundings.
